"Coyotes," Bateman writes, "are thought of as slinking, skulking animals, and are often reviled as vermin, particularly in the West, but they are a successful, resourceful species, and should not be discriminated against." In Coyote in Winter Sage, Robert Bateman decided to paint "a really majestic male I had once seen, and to put him in a noble stance". If the pose seems a touch majestic to those who know the Coyote best as a mangy looking, tail heavy dog trotting foxlike across the sagebrush plains or as a nightime marauder of livestock around the farm, it must be remembered that the Coyote is incredibly cunning and adaptable, and surely there is majesty in the animal's story of ecological conquest and invincibility in the face of ever intensifying human interference.
